Dear families,
Today was the Friends Academy Halloween parade! Students and teachers dressed in costumes and celebrated Halloween together. The parade concluded with a special All School Meeting in the commons. Then, the third grade had a holiday snack. Thank you to all of the families who helped organize the special snack and provided food for the event!

A highlight from last week was meeting with the kindergarten buddies for the first time! Each third grader is now the "big buddy" of a kindergartener from Mrs. Martin's class. Third graders and their kindergarten buddies will spend time throughout the year getting to know each other better and working on special projects and activities. Our next buddy time is scheduled for November 16th. On that day we will be decorating t-shirts for Turkey Trot together. Please help your child find a white t-shirt that they could bring to school to decorate! You may view more pictures of our first buddy meeting on the "photos" page of the newsletter.
A few curriculum highlights from the week:
Math
- Addition of 3 and 4 digit numbers
- Addition with regrouping
- Addition word problems
Cursive
- Review of the "tow away" letters
Language Arts
- Compound words
- Contractions
- We finished reading Minstrel in the Tower last week. One idea that was introduced in the story is the family shield or crest. Students have been working on making a shield design that represents their own family.
- This week we started reading our new class novel Santiago's Silver Mine which takes place in rural Mexico and ties into our Social Studies unit.
Social Studies
- We studied a variety of types of maps and learned about map keys.
- Students worked in small groups to create different maps of Mexico.
- They also began painting their Dia de los Muertos altars.
Next Wednesday, a group of wood carvers from Oaxaca, Mexico will be coming to Friends Academy to share their sculptures with the third grade. The presentation will begin at 12:30 in the library. Parents are welcome to join us! Another upcoming event is the Book Fair and Authorfest week. Janice Griffin is looking for parent volunteers to help her plan this event, starting now and through the week of November 16th. If you are interested in helping out before or during the book fair, please contact Janice directly at: [email protected]. There are quite a few more events coming up in November so please be sure to check out the "important dates" page to learn more.
Have a wonderful weekend!
