Another highlight from the week was getting to see Friends Academy's 3D printer in action! In the coming weeks, third graders will be learning more about 3D printing in their technology classes. They also will be learning about some of the uses of this exciting technology.
Looking Ahead:
We will be celebrating Valentines Day on February 11th. This will include a special snack, coordinated by the room parents. Students may also exchange Valentine cards with the rest of the grade on this day. Thank you for your help in planning this special holiday activity!

A few curriculum highlights from the week:
Math
- Students used their understanding of basic multiplication to solve "extended fact" problems. For example, they learned that they could multiply 3 x 500 mentally by using the base fact 3 x 5.
Social Studies
- Students learned about the Japanese holiday, Children's Day, a holiday that celebrates the happiness and health of children.
- They then began making their own carp kites. On Children's Day, these kites are hung as decorations outside of the homes of families with children. In Japan, the carp is considered a symbol of strength because of the fish's daring journey, fighting river currents as they swim upstream.
Language Arts
- Students continued learning about prefixes, suffixes, and base words.
- In writing, students spent time researching their individual Japan topics, and began learning how to organize information into written paragraphs.
- In reading, students began book clubs! Over the next few weeks, they will be reading versions of the classic stories Swiss Family Robinson or Knights of the Round Table. As they read, they will be discussing their stories with their book club groups. Students will also have "jobs" such as Discussion Director, who leads group book discussions, Art Director, who visualizes and illustrates important parts of the story, and Word Finder, who identifies and shares interesting vocabulary words. Students will rotate through these and other jobs as they continue reading and discussing their stories.
