Dear families,
Welcome back! I hope that you all had a wonderful March break. Monday morning was filled with excitement as students eagerly shared their adventures from vacation. It has been fun catching up and hearing all of the great stories!
On Tuesday, we were lucky to have a special visitor join us. Lyn Hoopes, a local poet and author, talked to our class about poetry writing. She shared some of her work and then helped students to write their own poems! Lyn also brought in beautiful photography, which students used as inspiration for their writing.
Looking ahead...
Parent-teacher conferences are fast approaching. I have posted a parent-teacher conference sign up sheet in the third grade hallway. Also, ERB scores are in. If you are interested in seeing them, please email Jeanne Machado at: jmachado@friendsacademy1810.org to schedule an appointment to meet with Melinda Foley-Marsello.
On April 28th, the third grade will be going to The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Each classroom was provided one free chaperone ticket. I would like to offer this opportunity first to parents who have not yet had a chance to chaperone a trip. If you are interested in joining us please let me know!
A few curriculum highlights from the week:
Math
- Division of two digit numbers by one digit numbers
- Division with regrouping
- Division with remainders
Social Studies
- We began learning about the continent of Africa and talked about ancient Egypt, which will be the major focus of this unit.
Language Arts
- Poetry writing
- In Reading we began two new class novels. One reading group is reading about Helen Keller and the other is reading about Laura Bridgman. Both Keller and Bridgman were brave pioneers in the advancement of education for blind and deaf people in the United States and all over the world.
- Students also selected a famous person in history who they will be studying independently.
- In spelling, we learned about silent letters.
Have a wonderful weekend!
